From June 23 to June 27, officers from across the region came together at the Fox Chapel Area School Police Department to participate in the Level 1-2-3 Controlled F.O.R.C.E. M.A.C.H. Training, one of the most advanced programs in defensive tactics Instructor certification and law enforcement training available today. This intensive course built upon the foundation of Level 1 and Level 2 M.A.C.H. (Mechanical Advantage Control Holds) techniques and pushed attendees to master new applications of use of force training, hand-to-hand combat training, and situational control in real-world environments.
Whether you’re a school resource officer, patrol officer, corrections professional, or part of a tactical response unit, this training delivered powerful tools for increasing officer safety and effectiveness in the field.

What Is the Controlled F.O.R.C.E. M.A.C.H. System?
The M.A.C.H. System is a nationally recognized defensive tactics training curriculum focused on control—not punishment. It emphasizes mechanical advantage over brute force, ensuring techniques can be applied effectively regardless of the size or strength of the subject or the officer. The system progresses through three levels:
✅ Level 1: Arrest and Control Tactics
The training kicked off with a strong foundation in the M.A.C.H.™ System, emphasizing safe, effective control of both compliant and non-compliant individuals. Through proper body mechanics, leverage, and non-lethal force strategies, officers gained the core skills required for real-world arrest and control scenarios.
Level 1 Highlights Included:
- Escort Positions & Transitional Movement – Maintaining control during subject relocation
- Mechanical Advantage Control Holds (M.A.C.H.™) – Joint-based techniques that rely on leverage, not strength
- M.A.C.H.™ Takedowns – Safe takedown methods that reduce risk of injury
- M.A.C.H.™ Handcuffing Techniques – Smooth, controlled transition to custody
- Officer Positioning & Tactical Approach – Enhancing situational awareness and subject engagement
- M.A.C.H.™ Team Arrest Tactics – Coordinated team-based control methods for high-risk apprehensions
- Baton Subject Control Techniques – Ensuring compliance through non-lethal baton applications
These essential defensive tactics lay the groundwork for safer arrests, improved control under pressure, and reduced use-of-force liability—making them critical skills for law enforcement professionals at any level.
✅ Level 2: Officer Survival Tactics
Building upon the principles from Level 1, Level 2 introduced advanced defensive tactics through immersive, scenario-based training. Officers engaged in high-stress simulations focused on close-quarters threats, emphasizing decision-making and survival in rapidly evolving situations.
Topics Covered:
- Hand-to-Hand Protection & Disruption – Defensive striking, blocking, and redirection under attack
- Baton Disruption Techniques – Using batons effectively in tight, multi-threat environments
- Edged Weapon Defense – Recognizing, avoiding, and countering knife attacks
- Ground Defense & Escape Maneuvers – Techniques to recover and regain control from the ground
- Weapon Retention (Holstered & Unholstered) – Preventing firearm loss during physical confrontations
- Firearm & Knife Disarming – Tactics for neutralizing armed assailants under immediate threat
This portion of the training was a wake-up call to the realities of hand-to-hand combat training and personal defense, preparing officers to act without hesitation when their safety—and lives—are on the line.
✅ Level 3: Countermeasure and Instructor Development Training
The final and most advanced phase of the M.A.C.H.™ System, Level 3, focused on countermeasure tactics and instructor-level leadership. Officers learned to apply, reverse, and instruct high-level control techniques in unpredictable, high-threat environments.
Advanced Training Modules Included:
- Reverse Application of M.A.C.H.™ Levels 1–5 – Mastering the art of countering control holds
- Advanced M.A.C.H.™ Techniques (Levels 6–10) – Complex holds, transitions, and control sequences
- Ambush Countermeasure Drills – Reacting to sudden, close-quarters attacks
- Counter Tie-Up Defense – Breaking grips and positional tie-ups during physical engagements
- Unconventional Weapon Access Scenarios – Drawing weapons in restrictive, real-world conditions
- Knife & Firearm Countermeasure Training – Extreme close-contact survival tactics
Level 3 is designed for those who operate in volatile or high-risk environments, including tactical units, corrections, and specialized response teams. It also equips graduates to return to their departments as certified trainers, ready to lead the next generation of defensive tactics training.
📢 Why This Training Matters
Each level of the M.A.C.H.™ System builds upon the last—offering a scalable, real-world applicable progression in use-of-force training and law enforcement tactics. Whether in schools, on patrol, or inside corrections facilities, officers left the program better prepared to control threats, reduce harm, and lead with professionalism and confidence.
