From May 12 to May 16, security officers from GEO Group came together in Folkston, Georgia, to participate in a dynamic and intensive Defensive Tactics (DT) Training Course. This specialized program focused on enhancing the readiness, response capabilities, and tactical effectiveness of correctional security professionals.

Designed around the Controlled F.O.R.C.E. M.A.C.H. System, the training covered a range of real-world skills necessary for high-stakes environments, including arrest and control tactics, officer survival techniques, counter-measure strategies, and cell extraction protocols.
Core Topics Covered
The course was built on the foundational principles of the Controlled F.O.R.C.E. (Fully Operational Restraint Control Environment), a nationally recognized defensive tactics system trusted across military, law enforcement, and corrections sectors. Key modules included:
✅ M.A.C.H. Tactics (Mechanical Advantage Control Holds)
Participants mastered M.A.C.H. holds to quickly gain control of compliant and non- compliant subjects. These holds are essential in high-pressure situations where swift action is needed without causing unnecessary harm.
✅ Arrest and Control Tactics
Security officers gained vital hands-on experience in structured procedures for safely detaining individuals, de-escalating confrontations, and managing resistance with proportional force — always with an emphasis on safety, professionalism, and legal compliance.
Tactics included:
• Mechanical Advantage Control Holds (M.A.C.H.™)
• M.A.C.H.™ Takedowns for swift and secure subject control
• M.A.C.H.™ Handcuffing techniques for safe and efficient restraints
• Positioning strategies to maintain control and prevent escalation
• M.A.C.H.™ Team Arrest Tactics for coordinated multi-officer scenarios
• M.A.C.H.™ Baton Subject Control to manage aggressive or non-compliant individuals using defensive tools
These arrest and control modules form the core of defensive tactics for correction officers, providing reliable frameworks for managing real-world encounters.
✅ Officer Survival Tactics
Instructors drilled critical life-saving techniques focused on situational awareness, tactical positioning, and environmental scanning. These skills help officers anticipate and survive sudden threats, especially in volatile correctional settings.
Included in the survival training were:
• Hand-to-Hand Protection/Disruption techniques to stop attacks before they escalate
• Baton Protection/Disruption tactics to gain control in close quarters
• Edged Weapon Awareness & Defense for identifying and reacting to blade threats
• Ground Defense and Escape to survive and reposition in takedown situations
• Weapon Retention (In and Out-of-Holster) strategies to prevent disarmament
• Weapon Disarm techniques for regaining control when a threat presents with a weapon
These tactics reinforced the critical mission of security officer survival training: always be prepared, stay alert, and protect yourself and others under all conditions.
✅ Counter-Measures
To stay ahead of unpredictable assaults, officers were trained in a wide range of counter-measure tactics designed to disrupt, redirect, and neutralize threats quickly and effectively.
Hands-on components included:
• M.A.C.H.™ 1–5 in reverse for defense and redirection
• M.A.C.H.™ 6–10 advanced control options
• Counter Measure Hand-to-Hand Drills for reflex conditioning
• Counter Measure Counter Ties Drills to overcome physical resistance
• Unconventional Weapon Draws for real-world carry scenarios
• Counter Measure Knife/Gun Drills to neutralize armed threats in close quarters
This module emphasized adaptability and responsiveness — critical skills for managing high-threat correctional environments with professionalism and precision.
These enhancements provide security officers with a fully integrated approach to defensive tactics training, empowering them with the tools they need to confidently manage risks and protect lives on the job.
✅ Cell Extraction Protocols
In high-risk inmate extraction situations, coordination and precision are key. Officers drilled team-based entries and extractions, using shields, control holds, and clear communication to minimize injury and liability.
Key Takeaways for Security Professionals
This DT training for security officers wasn’t just a box-checking exercise — it was a powerful reset on how correctional officers can maintain control, safety, and professionalism in every interaction.
Attendees left with:
• Increased confidence in hands-on control tactics
• Improved reaction time under pressure
• Enhanced teamwork in high-threat environments
• A deeper understanding of force continuum protocols
• Tools for reducing use-of-force incidents through control and communication
Most importantly, officers walked away better prepared to protect themselves, their team members, and the inmates in their care.
Why This Training Matters
In correctional environments, defensive tactics for correction officers are not optional — they’re essential. The Controlled F.O.R.C.E. system gives GEO Group staff a consistent, court-defensible methodology for managing physical confrontations without escalating violence.
With correctional institutions facing staffing shortages, rising inmate aggression, and public scrutiny, training like this ensures GEO Group security officers remain resilient, capable, and mission-ready.
